GLUCOSAMINE HCL
Glucosamine an amino-monosaccharide, is a component of almost all human tissues, including cartilage. Hydrochloride form (HCL) of this nutrient is more pure and powerful than the sulfate form.
Historical or traditional use: Used to build and maintain cartilage, treat arthritis and other joint diseases. May relieve the crippling effects of these diseases. Glucosamine provides pain relief and improved function in OA of the knees. which increases with age Forms the core of skeletal bones. Sometimes relieves muscle injuries, relieves tendonitis and repairs damaged cartilage
Activity: Research has found that combining glucosamine HCI with chondroitin is particularly effective in building and maintaining cartilage. Together, they help the joints regain their flexibility and range of movement.
How much is usually taken? 1500 mg daily in divided doses.
Side effects or interactions? There are no known contraindications to glucosamine supplementation. Few short-term side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, drowsiness, skin rash, and headache have been noted in some. There has been an unsubstantiated concern that glucosamine derived from the shellfish exoskeletons may cause reactions in people allergic to shellfish.
CHONDROITIN SULFATE
Occurs naturally in human cartilage, bone, cornea, skin and the arterial wall. Chondroitin is a substance that gives cartilage its elasticity.
Historical or traditional use: Used as nutritional therapy which differs from mere pain relief by actually repairing damage and rebuilding health new tissue.
Activity: Chondroitin gives cartilage its elasticity & contributes to strength, flexibility, and shock absorption. Helps enhance fluid protection within joint systems so there is better lubrication and nutrient transport. Has been known to restore joint function in some people.
How much is usually taken? Recommended dosage is 1200 mg daily in divided doses.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Patients taking blood-thinners should heed caution. Chondroitin is chemically similar to blood-thinning drugs such as heparin, warfarin, and even aspirin, and could cause excessive bleeding.
METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE - MSM
A sulfur containing supplement occurring naturally in the human body. MSM is needed for the manufacture of many proteins, including those forming hair, muscles, and skin. Also needed to maintain strong connective tissue, cartilage, tendon and ligaments.
Historical or traditional use: Used as a nutritional therapy to treat help treat arthritis, back pain, muscle pain, tendonitis and athletic injuries to name a few.
Activity: Significantly eases the suffering of patients with different types of pain and inflammatory conditions. Can reduce many disabilities and loss of productivity. May even deliver as much or even more relief as some of the standard painkillers.
How much is usually taken? Studies have shown that 2000 mg or less is adequate for most people.
Are there any side effects or interactions? No known side effect have been noted. Some people have experienced slight gastrointestinal upsetment when taking high doses at the start. Therefore it is best to start with a small dose and build up slowly to avoid this.
HYALURONIC ACID
Hyaluronic Acid is a compound present in every tissue of the body, with the highest concentrations occurring in connective tissues such as skin and cartilage. Hyaluronic Acid is an important constituent of joint fluid where it serves as a lubricant and plays a role in resisting compressive forces.
Historical or traditional use: Hyaluronic Acid is relatively new on the market.
SCULLCAP
Member of the mint family.
Historical or traditional use: Scullcap was used historically as a sedative for persons with nervous tension and insomnia. It was also used as a remedy nerve pain. Chinese scullcap is typically used in herbal combinations to treat inflammatory skin conditions, allergic diseases, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and high blood pressure.
Active constituents: Chinese scullcap contains a flavonoid substance, baicalin, that has been shown to have protective actions on the liver. Antiallergy actions and the inhibition of bacteria and viruses in test tube studies has been documented with Chinese scullcap.
How much is usually taken? For the dried herb, 1–2 grams three times per day is often used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Due to limited information on the safety of scullcap during pregnancy and lactation, it should be avoided by pregnant or lactating women.
BOSWELLIA
Used in connection with the following conditions: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis, Bursitis.
Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies): In the ancient Ayurvedic medical texts of India, the gummy exudate from boswellia is grouped with other gum resins and referred to collectively as guggals. Historically, the guggals were recommended for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, pulmonary disease, and ringworm.
Active constituents: The gum oleoresin consists of essential oils, gum, and terpenoids. The terpenoid portion contains the boswellic acids that have been shown to be the active constituents in boswellia. Studies have shown that the boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for inflammatory conditions. Boswellia inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in the body, such as leukotrienes. As opposed to NSAIDs, long-term use of boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach. Controlled, double blind studies have shown that boswellia extracts are very helpful for ulcerative colitis.
How much is usually taken? The standardized extract of the gum oleoresin of boswellia is recommended by many herbalists. For rheumatoid arthritis, osteosrthritis, or boswellia can be taken in the amount of 150 mg three times per day.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Boswellia is generally safe when used as directed. Rare side effects can include diarrhea, skin rash, and nausea. Any inflammatory joint condition should be closely monitored by a nutritionally oriented physician.
COLLAGEN TYPE II
Has been shown to clinically improve joint flexibility and arthritic symptoms in humans.
MANGANESE
Manganese is needed for healthy skin, bone, and cartilage formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also helps activate superoxide dismutase (SOD)—an important antioxidant enzyme.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Amounts found in supplements (5–20 mg) have not been linked with any toxicity. Excessive intake of manganese can lead to the rare side effects individuals with cirrhosis should check with their physician before use.
How much is usually taken? 5 –15 mg is generally considered to be a reasonable level.
ASCORBIC ACID
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a powerful antioxidant.
Historical or traditional use: Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, the “glue” that strengthens many parts of the body, such as muscles and blood vessels. Vitamin C also plays important roles in wound healing as well as dozens of other health benefits.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Some individuals develop diarrhea after as little as a few thousand milligrams of vitamin C per day, while others are not bothered by ten times this amount. However, high levels of vitamin C can deplete the body of copper —an essential nutrient. People should be sure to maintain adequate copper intake at higher intakes of vitamin C. Copper is found in many multivitamin/mineral supplements such as Perfectly Balanced Whole Food Multi by Natural Nutrition Center.
How much is usually taken? Doctors of natural medicine often recommend 500–1,000 mg per day. |
